The pier at Akaroa where the French landed on Banks Peninsula east of Christchurch. While they went back to get more people to come out the British colonised the whole island. However, the town retains some of the French influence with many French street names and the Shell garage selling L'essence.
The view from the appropriately named Hilltop out across Banks Peninsular with Akaroa in the distance. This photograph simply does not do justice to reality.
